BrightBytes Unveils Dropout Prediction and Prevention Module
Secure, Individualized Early Warning Module Detects At-Risk Students Before Dropouts Occur

San Francisco, CA – September 29, 2014 – BrightBytes, a fast-growing educational research and analytics organization that counts 1 in 9 U.S. schools as customers, today announced the availability of its Early Warning Module. Built on the organization’s Clarity platform, the Early Warning Module identifies at-risk students based on individualized and building-specific triggers. It enables schools and districts to proactively predict potential dropouts, and intervene early.

In the United States alone, more than 7,000 students drop out of school every day(1). An additional 19% of high school freshmen do not graduate on time(2). “Ensuring that students graduate is a complex, multi-faceted challenge: We must properly identify at-risk students, connect these students to remediation services, and ensure that those services are completed,” says Rob Mancabelli, BrightBytes co-founder and Chief Executive Officer. “Through its predictive approach, the BrightBytes Early Warning Module closes the loop from identification to prevention. It identifies students at risk of dropping out with up to 40% more accuracy than traditional flag-based systems.”

The Early Warning Module is the result of a partnership between BrightBytes and Mazin Education. “Mazin Education has built a world-class algorithm that’s unlike any other in the early warning space,” says Mancabelli. “By understanding the historical makeup at the student, building, and regional level, the module accurately identifies students as early as Elementary school. Moreover, it provides actionable recommendations for intervention.” Dr. Mariam Azin, Mazin founder and Chief Executive Officer, adds, “We are proud to bring 15 years of research on early warning to its culmination on the Clarity platform where it can make a national impact.”

In addition, the BrightBytes team builds its modules with the highest regard to data privacy and security. “Our number one priority is to protect the privacy of students, teachers, and schools,” says Hisham Anwar, BrightBytes co-founder and Chief Technology Officer. “With the Early Warning Module, we have an opportunity to pinpoint at-risk students, and to do so through a 100% secure online environment.”

As an organization, BrightBytes’ mission is to improve the way the world learns. Its research and analysis platform, called Clarity, gives leadership teams the evidence to prioritize learning initiatives, thoughtfully allocate spending, and identify the factors that most impact student learning.

Early Pilot Studies for Mazin EnCompass™ Show Promising Results
Mazin Education demonstrates improvements in identification, referral and monitoring of at-risk students.

Columbus, OH: Early results from pilot studies of Mazin EnCompass™, a software program designed to help districts connect at-risk students to services, show a marked increase in identification, referral and program completion rates. Schools using the program have been able to increase the number of students served, decrease the amount of time needed to get students into appropriate services, and better monitor the efficacy of programs for substance abuse, bullying, mental health and suicide prevention, violence prevention and academic intervention.
Mazin EnCompass™, published by Mazin Education, is an early identification, referral and monitoring system designed to help schools ensure that at-risk students are receiving and benefiting from the academic, mental health or other services they need to be successful, safe and healthy at school. It helps streamline and enhance existing initiatives such as PBIS (Positive Behavioral Systems of Support), RTI (Response to Intervention), MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support), Student Assistance Teams and anti-bullying initiatives.
Mazin EnCompass™ was developed by educational psychologist Dr. Mariam Azin and researchers at PRES Associates as part of the Safe School/Healthy Students grant program. “What we realized early on is that often the problem is not the programs that are in place. The problem is that students are not connecting to the programs,” says Dr. Azin. “It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about mental health services, dropout prevention, or reading intervention. Students cannot benefit from services they are not receiving.” Mazin EnCompass™ was developed in order to “close the cracks in the pipeline” and ensure that at-risk students are matched with the right services to improve academic, social and mental health outcomes. Dr. Azin launched her new company, Mazin Education, in 2012 to provide a platform for large-scale implementation of Mazin EnCompass for districts, states and educational service centers who want to improve services for at-risk students.
The software program includes sophisticated algorithms to automatically flag students who are demonstrating warning signs of dropping out. “We know what the warning signs are,” says Dr. Azin. “If we can connect the dots between attendance patterns, grade patterns, behavior and other risk factors, we can predict, sometimes years in advance, the probability that students will drop out. Mazin EnCompass automates this for districts.” Dr. Azin also stresses the importance of early identification and referral to reduce the risk of school violence, suicide and other crises. “It’s all about knowing the warning signs. If we can streamline and automate the reporting and referral process, we can get these kids into services before we have a tragedy.”
Mazin Education has just published a report detailing the pilot study results. For a copy of Making it Work: How Mazin EnCompass Increases the Effectiveness of Student Assistance Teams and Support Services, visit www.mazineducation.com/research.

Mazin Education Helps Publishers Prepare for Common Core Assessments
Educational Software Developer Releases Assessment Platform for Educational Publishers

March 11, 2013
Columbus, OH: Educational software developer Mazin Education (www.mazineducation.com) has released the Mazin Assess™ Publisher Enterprise Edition. The assessment platform is now available for publishers to integrate into curriculum programs for standards-based progress monitoring and high-stakes testing practice.

Mazin Assess™ Publisher Enterprise Edition provides publishers with an easy, cost-effective way to upgrade their existing assessment capabilities to better match the new Common Core State Standards. “Mazin Assess™ is the most flexible and adaptable assessment program on the market today,” says Dr. Mariam Azin, founder of Mazin Education. “We developed Mazin Assess™ because we needed the ability to generate a greater variety of item types to accurately measure the kinds of knowledge demanded by the Common Core State Standards. Multiple choice and simple short answer or essay questions will not adequately prepare students for the new high-stakes tests.”
Students in most states will face new assessments in 2014 created by one of two multi-state assessment consortia, PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for Careers and College) or the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. The new assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics are expected to have items designed to measure higher levels of learning, including writing assessments requiring students to synthesize responses to multiple sources, and math assessments requiring students to explain how they got their answers. A recent report by the EPE Research Center suggests that students and teachers are not prepared for the new assessments, and some experts expect test scores to drop when they are adopted.

The Mazin Assess™ Publisher Enterprise Edition can help publishers and curriculum developers create assessments tied to curriculum and instruction that better match the high-stakes tests students will be facing next year. The flexible, user-friendly platform allows publishers to develop Technology-Enhanced Constructed Response, Evidence-Based Selected Response, a range of Prose Constructed Response and a wide variety of item types using innovative drag-and-drop and matching technologies. “Publishers will be able to be much more creative in the types of items they develop, so they can more accurately assess students’ level of knowledge and understanding,” says Dr. Azin. “If we’re going to prepare students for success on the upcoming high-stakes assessments, we need to give them item types that more accurately mirror them.”

Mazin Assess™ is one of two educational software programs developed by Mazin Education. Mazin EnCompass™, an online dropout prevention and student services management program, will formally launch in the spring of 2013.

Mazin Education Wins Statewide Assessment Contract in Indiana
Indiana Selects Mazin Assess for Career and Technical Education Assessment Pilot Program

Columbus, OH: Educational software developer Mazin Education (www.mazineducation.com) has been selected to administer Career and Technical Education (CTE) course assessments for the state of Indiana. The statewide pilot program will use Mazin Assess™, a cutting-edge online assessment engine developed by Mazin Education, to track student achievement and growth in select CTE courses.
The 2012-2013 Indiana CTE Course Assessment Project is part of the Indiana College and Career Pathways program, which provides an aligned sequence of secondary and postsecondary courses to help students prepare for high-skill, high-wage careers that are in demand in the state of Indiana. The Indiana CTE Assessment Project is designed to ensure that students are on track for an industry-recognized credential, technical certification, or an associate or baccalaureate degree.

The 2012-2013 pilot program will roll out online assessments for five CTE courses, ranging from Nutrition and Wellness to Personal Financial Responsibility. Mazin Education’s sister company, PRES Associates, is providing psychometric expertise in piloting assessment items and helping to develop the final assessments for the courses. Based on the spring pilot results and the associated item analyses, final versions of the course assessments will be developed and administered by PRES Associates and Mazin Education in May, 2013.
“We’re happy to be working with the Indiana CTE Course Assessment Project,” says John McHale, Chief Operating Officer for Mazin Education. “Mazin Assess™ has the right suite of tools for this project, and is adaptable enough to grow with the program as their needs change.”

Mazin Assess™ was developed specifically to help states and districts accurately assess the kinds of knowledge students must demonstrate for college and career success. The new statewide Indiana contract for Mazin Education follows a successful CTE assessment pilot for the state of Wyoming. “Mazin Assess™ is the most flexible and adaptable assessment program on the market today,” says Mariam Azin, founder of Mazin Education. “We developed Mazin Assess™ because we needed the ability to generate a greater variety of item types to accurately measure the kinds of knowledge demanded by the Common Core State Standards and new CTE standards. We can go way beyond multiple choice to develop any type of online assessment that Indiana may need in the future.”

Mazin Assess™ is one of two educational software programs developed by Mazin Education. Mazin EnCompass™, an online dropout prevention and student services management program, will formally launch in the spring of 2013.

Mazin Education Brings New Accountability Solutions to Schools

Columbus, OH: How can schools make sure that every child is on track for graduation and meeting
the new Common Core State Standards? Mazin Education was launched in 2012 to help educators
find the answer.

Founder Dr. Mariam Azin created the new company with specific goals in mind, building
on her experience as founder and CEO of Planning, Research & Evaluation (PRES) Associates,
Inc. “In my 20 years of working in the field with schools and districts, I realized that we needed to
have better ways of evaluating student performance, and better ways to catch students before
they fail,” she says. “Mazin Education builds on the experience I gained in research and evaluation
to develop software tools that make it easier to measure student achievement and coordinate
intervention services.”

Mazin Education, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, opened its doors this fall with two
initial products. Mazin Assess is an innovative online assessment engine geared towards
measuring the kind of knowledge required by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which
have been adopted by 45 states. New high-stakes assessments for the CCSS are under
development by two testing consortia, PARCC and SBAC and will be given to students starting in
2014. Mazin Assess was developed to accommodate the different test item types needed to
accurately measure the CCSS.

Mazin Education’s second product, Mazin EnCompass, takes a more holistic approach to
student outcomes. Going beyond academic assessment, Mazin EnCompass provides an early-
warning system to help schools identify and reach students at risk of behavioral problems,
bullying, mental health issues, academic failure or dropping out. Says Dr. Azin, “When you look at
students who drop out of school, you’ll see warning signs going back years. We developed
EnCompass to give schools a systematic way to identify at-risk students and connect them to
appropriate mental health and family services, academic interventions and behavioral
modification programs to increase their chances of success.”

Mazin Education is a uniquely 21st-century company, operating on an “intellectual capital
on demand” model. Chief Operating Officer John McHale says, “In today’s business environment,
it’s an advantage to be small, agile and responsive to market needs and pressures. By leveraging a
distributed workforce and a network of strategic partners, we can tap into exactly the right talent
we need to serve our clients well while keeping overhead low.”

Mazin Education is currently focused on expanding strategic partnership and planning the
next phase of software development. Additional teacher accountability and intervention tools
building on their current programs are likely to be developed next.
